Fishing Holidays Abroad - Now is the Time
By Ian Ford
Everyone is talking about the financial crisis and the effect it is having on their lives. The obvious thing to do is cut back on luxuries and ensure that whatever money you do have is not wasted. I just want to point out the not-so-obvious idea that fishing holidays abroad need not be considered luxury items and can be a way to save money. That's got to be good news for all you adventurous anglers out there.
Travelling abroad used to be very expensive with long haul flights costing a month's salary or more even in economy class. Nowadays that is not true and even base fares to exotic destinations are quite reasonable. The biggest change must be that the savvy traveller can now do their own research using one of the many flight websites and often save big money by choosing to fly during a non-peak time. Fishing seasons do not generally create a peak so you should be off to a flying start (excuse the pun).
Whatever flight you do get will almost certainly cost more than local travel. The payoff comes through the savings made at the other end. Whereas accommodation, food, licenses et cetera are all relatively expensive in Europe and the US, these things in developing countries can be amazingly cheap. The extra fixed cost of fishing holidays abroad is offset by daily savings whilst abroad which gives the wonderful solution that the longer you go for, the more you save. Run that one by your partner/spouse!
Bigger savings are available if you choose to forego a bit of comfort and camp. This is sometimes a necessity to get to the very best fishing spots anyway and, let's face it, there's no point going half way around the world to miss out on the best action.
To me, the biggest attraction of fishing holidays abroad is that they offer fantastic sport for anglers of just about any persuasion. Sea-anglers and fresh-water anglers are both catered for as well as specialists such as catfish hunters, carp fisherfolk and fly fanatics. Often, there will be somewhere in the world offering the chance of your style of fishing but with some bigger, fiercer or more abundant local species to make your trip a dream come true.
Just like 'cheap flights', the world-wide-web is your starting point again. With a small investment in time you should be able to find a fishing holiday abroad to suit your interests, your budget and perhaps even to take account of your non-fishing companions. Forget about the financial crisis, it will pass. Your love of fishing will not - so get searching and book that dream trip to save yourself money and keep your spirits up.
