Fishing Holidays Abroad
Put a Spark Back Into Your Sport

By Ian Ford

Whatever your style of fishing, there comes a point when the challenges available locally just don't match up to your dreams. Whether you want to catch bigger fish or more exotic fish, it's time to go further afield for more exciting sport. Fishing holidays abroad offer new challenges that will revitalise your whole sense of enjoyment and bring back the spark that first got you hooked.

Where to go fishing abroad

Your choice of destination should be determined by the style of fishing you enjoy most. That doesn't mean going abroad to catch the same species. A little research will allow you to find more exotic fish which are best caught the same way. One good starting point is the search tool at FishBase. This allows you to search by country and by common name.

Check out 'Common Name contains salmon' and you'll find a list from the Abedajo Salmon of Cuba to the Yellow Mouth Salmon of Trinidad and Tobago. That excludes the largest of all the Salmonids, the mighty Taimen of the Russian Federation and Mongolia.

If you have an idea where you would like to go, try Information by Country/Island. Enter 'Russian Federation' here, limiting the results to 'Gamefishes' to get more than 150 species. You'll find half a dozen species of Salmon here, found mostly on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East (facing Alaska, and with similar fishing but with much more of a sense of adventure).

Getting prepared for a fishing holiday abroad

You probably need to arrange your own international flight. You can make big savings here so do check around. You will need to be sure about any stopovers en-route. Use an experienced travel agent if you are not sure about such things as transit times and visa requirements.

You will almost certainly have to arrange your own visas, though you could make use of a visa service here. These know the latest regulations and can work out quite reasonable if you do not need to take a day (or days) off work to travel to another city for the application.

You should be able to manage travel insurance and foreign currency requirements online. Don't stint on that travel insurance if you are going somewhere remote. Check that you have full cover for an emergency evacuation - by helicopter if necessary. Check that your expensive equipment and fishing tackle is fully covered for theft or damage.

You will need to take appropriate clothing and equipment for the local environment and, most importantly, suitable tackle for the fish you intend to catch. Take plenty as you probably won't find good supplies locally.

How much will a fishing holiday abroad cost?

A fishing holiday abroad need not break the bank. A long-haul flight can seem like a large expense but often this is offset by cheaper living costs locally. The longer your fishing holiday the more this works in your favour.

You could choose to arrange everything yourself. That could work out cheaper for a group but does mean that someone ends up having to do a lot of research and planning before the trip gets underway. For individuals, and for convenience, it is often better to book a fishing holiday abroad with one of the specialist providers.

Research your options thoroughly. You can look for fishing holiday providers in magazines and online. Don't just look at the big providers; check out the smaller ones too and you may well find they offer a niche solution that suits you better.

Different providers offer different levels of service, and different inclusions. Ensure that you are clear what is included in the cost of the fishing holiday and what is not for each potential provider. Such information should be clearly available before you book. Add the cost of the fishing holiday itself to your estimates for the excluded services and you have a real figure that can be compared between providers.

Your final decision must then attempt to match the quantity and quality of fishing on offer against the total cost. It's worth checking against a local option too as that puts the whole exercise into a better perspective.
